SilverSneakers Program Helps Older Adults Stay Fit for Free
November 26th, 2012 – Around the country, many adults who are enrolled in certain health care or Medicare plans have recently received notice of their eligibility for the SilverSneakers program. Rockin’ Fitness has researched and provided some information on this program and what it means for New Rockford residents.
The SilverSneakers Fitness Program is the nation’s leading fitness program designed exclusively for older adults. SilverSneakers provides a free basic fitness membership at any location around the country that participates in the program.
More than 40 Medicare health plans offer the program as a benefit to members across the nation. Regular participation in the program has been proven to help older adults manage their health and increase strength, balance and endurance.
Enrollment in SilverSneakers usually takes about 30 minutes. Each location provides individual or group tours either at enrollment or during the first week you are enrolled. Equipment demonstrations may occur at that time as well. Once enrolled, members are welcome to use any of the more than 11,000 participating locations nationwide.
At this time, SilverSneakers representatives have informed Rockin’ Fitness that there is too limited of a need for additional locations to initiate participate in the program. However, for those interested in the program, Rockin’ Fitness manager Brittany Allmaras offered this advice, “If enough people call in and nominate our fitness center for the program, we may be able to get it going. The community has to demonstrate demand for the program before they will consider us for it.”
