Opera House Youth Actors K-2 Raising the Curtain
July 14th, 2014 – Dakota Prairie Regional Center for the Arts in New Rockford is continuing its tradition of inspiring young artists and actors through its signature Opera House Youth Actors (OHYA) series, part of the Dakota Spark creative arts program.
The first section of OHYA, for students grades K-2, will be presenting "3 Piggy Opera" by Carol Kaplan and Sandi Becker at 5:00 p.m. on July 25. The show will be onstage at the Opera House, 818 Central Ave. New Rockford, and tickets are $3 for adults and free for kids. As with all operas, the story of the three little pigs and the big bad wolf will be told through song.
The OHYA class series, a musical theatre and stage production camp, is instructed by music teacher and stage performer Annette Hovey. Students experience stagecraft, costuming, rehearsal and production first-hand, working just like professional actors to put on a play for a real live audience. The K-2 OHYA camp starts July 16 and runs until July 25, ending with the performance that evening.
The second Opera House Youth Actors session for students in grades 3-9 runs weekdays from July 31-August 14 from 1-4 p.m., with performances on August 15, 16, and 17. Registration is still open for the older class session. Registration forms are available at the Latté Lobby coffee shop. Students living outside of New Rockford and Sheyenne are also welcome to register and attend classes. Contact DPRCA with any questions at (701) 947-2174.
