Eagles Stick Horse Races Coming June 17
April 25, 2017 - It is off to the races! The fourth annual Eagles Calcutta Stick Horse Race will run Saturday, June 17 at the New Rockford Eagles Club. The festivities will kick off with a grilled pork tenderloin supper prior to the auction of the stick horses.
Six stick horses will be auctioned off. Buyers can team up and pool their money to purchase a horse. The winning horse will receive half of the money from the stick horse auction. The 2016 stick horse winner “Prince” won $5,075.
In addition to bidding on a stick horse to race, spectators can bet on the horse they think will win. Fifty-fifty tickets can be purchased to put in the buckets of the corresponding race horses. At the end of the race, a ticket will be drawn from the buckets of the top three horses for Win, Place, and Show cash prizes.
Organizers of the Eagles Calcutta Stick Horse Race say it is similar to the Kentucky Derby. Spectators are encouraged to get into the derby spirit and show off their hats, dresses and horse show attire.
Funds raised from this event will go for the Eagles Club charitable giving. Last year the New Rockford club donated more than $20,000 to community, regional and state events and youth activities.
